Websites that have changed the world

We are in the middle of the second day of the internet training and have had quite a lively debate on several issues, from the statistics showing Tanzania having six times less internet users than neighbouring Kenya, to the general problems facing the print media in the country.

Everyone probably agreed with Deo Mushi, features editor of Daily News, that professionalism is the only way for a newspaper to survive and attract readers who will buy the paper. The local weekly papers Mwanahalisi and Raia Mwema were mentioned as such good examples.

We are still covering some of the websites that have changed the world and the way we operate in it, from the online bookshop Amazon to Facebook and Wikileaks. We visited the Twitter sites of Barack Obama and the ANC Youth leader Julius Malema of South Africa. We also spent some time going through the different search features of the Google, finding the map and satellite picture of Bukoba town, making a Google news search on Muammar Gaddafi in order to find the latest information about him from media sites only, and reading Kiswahili Google translations of articles originally written in Finnish language - totally understandable though done by a computer system.

Now it’s lunch break, with wali kuku and fresh salad.
